Accidents have become daily affair in the junction of three major roads- Chennai, Chengalpet, and Kelampakkam which is located near the land mark ARIGNAR ANNA ZOOLOGICAL PARK on the GST Highway. The junction had its recent mishap on 16 December 2011, in which 8 people were injured, out of which two are our faculties, two are college students and four are general public. Though Vandalur is considered to be a suburb, the increase in the number of schools, colleges and industries in and around, more prominently the location of the Zoological Park which is a tourist attraction, that have increased the population and vehicles, resulting in over congestion and accidents. It becomes a matter great concern for the public in general and the students in particular to cross the roads in spite of the presence of traffic signals and traffic police in the junction. Lack of over bridge, subway, and foot-path for pedestrians make the situation worse.
The local public, when approached regarding the issue, they assigned so many reasons such as rash driving, carelessness of people, moving hurriedly, insufficient space, talking over phones while crossing the road and violation of traffic rules etc. They felt that a subway would be one of the immediate solutions to reduce accidents.
Mr. D. Guna, the Panchayat Board (Local Body) President of Vandalur, when approached said that the proposal for a subway has already been submitted to the government of Tamil Nadu that is being followed sincerely and regularly by the local authorities and hoped that something good would be done for this menace. When asked about the foot-path near the zoo, he said that it has to be decided by the Forest and Highway Department. As the Government procedures take its own time for implementation, it becomes our responsibility to follow the traffic rules and make things easier for a secured life. - BBC Crescent School News Service
